Grated apple crumble bars

Grated apple crumble bars

Grating the apples instead of slicing them is what makes these bars set soft and jammy all the way to the edge.

Makes 12 · Medium · 45 minutes

Blades used

  • Peeler — for apples
  • Grater — for apples, lemon zest

Ingredients

  • 4 apples
  • 1 lemon
  • 1 1/2 cups oats
  • 1 cup flour
  • 3/4 cup brown sugar
  • ½ cup butter, melted
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • Pinch salt

Method

  1. Peel the apples, then grate them coarsely and squeeze out the excess juice.
  2. Grate the lemon zest over the apples and stir through the cinnamon.
  3. Rub the oats, flour, sugar, butter and salt together into a loose crumble.
  4. Press two thirds of it firmly into a lined tray to make the base.
  5. Spread the grated apple over the top, then scatter the remaining crumble.
  6. Bake at 350°F for 35–40 minutes until golden, and cool fully before cutting.

From our kitchen

Cut them cold, straight from the fridge — warm bars crumble apart on the knife.
